myth busters

myth

Cats are aloof and do not get along with other pets, including dogs.cat and dog

truth

Many cats are social and can be great companions for dogs, other cats and the entire family.

Cats are capable of getting along with other pets, including dogs. Many people seem to believe that, in general, cats are aloof and anti-social. However, most cats enjoy company—whether it’s with another cat, dog or human.

Many of the cats up for adoption at the Dumb Friends League reside in cat colonies, where they live and interact with other cats throughout the day. We also have cats in need of homes that have previously lived with other animals, including dogs.

You cannot train cats.

truth

Cats can be trained and learn tricks!

Many people seem to think that cats can train you, but you cannot train them. Well, that simply is not true! Cats are intelligent and many can be easily trained, just like dogs and other animals. You can teach them tricks like sit, down, rollover and “high five,” and even train them to do agility like dogs. Plus, clicker-training cats can help prevent and address unwanted feline behaviors like house-soiling and jumping on countertops or furniture.

It is never too late to start behavior training. Plus, it strengthens the bond between you and your pet.

In general, animals respond well to positive reinforcement training techniques. But, it's always important to remember that you need to be consistent, patient and understanding when training any companion animal.

myth

It’s expensive to adopt a cat.money

truth

You get a great deal when you adopt a pet from the Dumb Friends League.

Our adoption fees range, depending on which pet you select, but it includes the following: spay/neuter, initial vaccinations, microchip ID implant and registration. In addition to that, you get a leash or carrier, as well as a 15-day health care program and a free office visit with a participating veterinarian. All pets are adopted with a collar and ID tag.

During CatFest, all cats (1 year or older) can be adopted for $50 off the regular adoption fee.
