Help the equines in our care

Over the past couple of months, the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center has taken in 85 malnourished and neglected horses from two cases. Forty-nine horses were relinquished by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, closely followed by 36 Arabians that included stallions, pregnant mares and newborn foals from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office. The number of starved horses Harmony has received this year is unprecedented. Communities are recognizing vulnerable and at-risk horses and no longer accepting this type of neglect, and Harmony is being asked to help more horses than ever.

These horses are gaining weight, feeling better and getting stronger, and we’re looking forward to their recovery and finding them homes. How can you help?

Just like with humans, the summer heat can take its toll on horses and other equines, and protecting your animals is an essential part of caring for them.

Trainer’s Tip: Catch up

At the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center, sometimes our staff sees horses that are difficult to catch. While a horse might see this as a game to play with us, it’s not one we want to participate in! You might have a trick or two that you like to use to correct this behavior, but let’s read about how the Harmony staff addresses the challenge.
